Riana and NZ political parties spectrum

Here are two talks by lawyer Riana Te Ngahue .

The first one accurately covers where the parties fit on the political spectrum.

That talk transcript here

It looks like this on a spectrum

The second video covers more about what she calls visions and actions of the parties. She explains that National Parties rhetoric about managing the economy better than Labour Party is not true by the data.

Note :
The political spectrum covers 3 things
-the government style
- social
- economic

What's missing from this talk

What these videos are explaining is that the right wing promises are more rhetoric (talking points) than fact. The right wing want smaller govt ie less regulation, , tax (on rich) asset owning  and more freedom to make profit.

But that profit comes at an expense . Because the rich make more profit it does not translate that you the workers get more money , this is why its sarcastically called trickle down economics .

In the late 1800s economics moved from a Labour theory of Value model to a Subjective Theory of Value model and made the basic supply-demand curve central to economics. This is the basic model where the price of a good and the amount sold is decided by the where demand (buyers) meets supply (sellers).

The  right wing parties completely focus on supply side of the graph . Be it the liberal National party or more right wing neo liberal ones like ACT party.

This just  cause crises because the majority and workers wages are stagnated and the wealth inequality grows . Yes there's more money in the economy but it goes to the rich (capitalists) not to you.

The only way to equalise society is to tax the rich more by the Government and spend that money in the economy . In this way the left  parties (Greens and Te Pati Maori ) that want raise tax on the rich try to take care of the demand side of the graph better.

Further to that more videos worth watching on the current system

Garys economics - Inequality is everything

Gary doesnt talk to politicians on his podcast because they are the problem. However he's since talked to Greens Chloe Swarbrick.

The Full Political NZ Spectrum

When she says left wing ie centre left for the Greens , she's describing what is a typically explained spectrum by the mainstream . However that's not strictly true for 3 reasons.

1) The mainstream and especially the  right wing view socialism as state run society when for the most part that's not true. Socialism is not when govt owns and does stuff.
2) The (true) left wing which are anti liberal ad anti-capitalist parties are not currently standing in NZ elections, so are forgotten about.
3) NZ is liberal democracy and only has capitalist political parties standing in elections so its within a very narrow bandwidth on the spectrum .

While the Greens are the most left wing party standing they are not left wing , they are centre. They want to fix capitalism not replace it . They just believe it needs more regulation , tax on wealthy, not selling off government assets and other govt intervention to do it.

Th full political spectrum looks more like this,  with every ideology and party on the right trying to fix capitalism and the left opposing it and wanting to replace it:

Note
-The right looks bigger than the left but its actually the reverse , the far left has more variation  than this and the right wing , but for the purposes of NZ  elections its not worth further splitting.

- NZ First is sitting in between national and act but its economic policies are left of national and its social policies are conservative and right of ACT. Conservatives in USA and Britain are way more neo liberal more like our ACT party but NZ First is not.

2-axis spectrum

Liberal v authoritarian
- the graph covers freedom/liberty and democracy well enough - as you move right you get less of it . Except not within the narrow capitalist band NZ political parties stand in from a governance perspective.

 1) The right sphere ACT is supposed to give more freedom than the left side ie Greens.
This is true only in strictly looking at laws , regulation and size of govt etc . But when looking at total society and economy this is not true, as this does not account for wealth gap increases where  capitalists have more control over government and both democracy reduces and workplace freedom and democracy reduces . Also those without money have very little freedom.
The more capitalist or neo liberal the economy the less freedom.

2) When some parties try implement socialism they act authoritarian like the CCP or the Bolshevik Party. This has given a misrepresentation of what the left is trying to achieve.

For that we need a different spectrum, where a political spectrum adds a second vertical axis for liberty v authority or progressive v traditional which tend to align.

Heres a couple of graphs that show the 2 axis

Bear in mind none of these are economically left, and they vary where ACT and NZ first is.

This recent facebook post that looks at only  economy v social shows the parties more accurately .

or this on which shows which flips the vertical axis and has act more in traditional [in this case more unchanging status quo ] showing different opinions.
